Pedestrian safety is critical to enhancing the long-term safety, health, and security of the City. Making our established crosswalks on Tega Cay Drive more visible to passing motorists has long been a topic of importance to City residents. This pedestrian-activated system will allow advanced notice of pedestrian activity within the crosswalks. The City gained the approval of The Federal Highway Administration to use Pedestrian-Actuated Rectangular Rapid-Flashing Beacons (RRFBs) at uncontrolled marked crosswalks on City-maintained roadways on a City-wide basis. Installations on State-maintained roadways requires the additional approval of the SC Dept. of Transportation (SCDOT). Before SCDOT will approve the use of RRFBs on Tega Cay Drive, they have requested a Pedestrian Study be completed in order to generate supportive data regarding pedestrian usage. The equipment for the data collection study was installed today. The equipment will be in place for approximately the remainder of the week.
