[ARCHIVED] UPDATE (7/21/16): Response to confirmed travel associated Zika virus in York County

Based on the report over the weekend regarding the confirmed travel associated Zika virus in York County, SCDHEC has recommended mosquito treatment in portions of the City as a precautionary measure. York County has notified the City of Tega Cay they will have a contractor coming in tonight, Thursday, July 21, to spray an area SCDHEC has instructed them to spray in regards to mosquito control. This is just as a precaution as SCDHEC has confirmed the person that was infected with the Zika virus was infected while traveling abroad.

A spray truck will be driving the following streets beginning at 9 PM this evening: Tega Cay Dr. from Cove Lane to the cul-de-sac at the end of Tega Cay Dr., Marina Dr., Chelsea Day Lane, Coventry Ct., Cambridge Ct., Mariners Ct., Windward Dr., Anchorage Lane, Harbor Ct., Regatta Ct., Topsail Circle, Point Clear Dr. to Triton Dr. and Triton Dr. to Pitcairn Park.

If you live on one of these streets, please remove any children’s toys from your front yards, keep your pets inside or, at a minimum in the back yard, and remove any water bowls/containers from the front yards until tomorrow. The material being sprayed is not an aerosol but we are asking that you take these extra precautions.

If you are normally out walking, biking, or jogging on these streets during this time, please alter your plans to go prior to 9 PM this evening. The company contracted by York County will only be in here tonight and should only take an hour or so to spray these areas.

If you have any questions about the spray or spraying process, please contact the York County Office of Emergency Management at (803) 326- 2300.

As a reminder, we continue to encourage our residents to take additional precautions to prevent mosquito bites and eliminating conditions that are favorable for mosquitoes in their own yards by:

• Using insect repellents.
• Ensuring screens are placed over windows.
• Wearing long-sleeves and pants or permethrin-treated clothes.
• Emptying any items that can hold water both inside and outside dwellings at least once a week. These items include tires, buckets, toys, trash containers and water bowls for pets.

If you have any questions or for more information regarding transmission, symptoms, and prevention please visit the SCDHEC website: http://www.scdhec.gov/Health/DiseasesandConditions/InfectiousDiseases/InsectAnimalBorne/ZikaVirus/ or contact SCDHEC at (803) 898-7769.
